Hawkstone Park

Hawkstone Park Hotel, situated in the heart of the Shropshire
countryside, boasts three golf courses, picturesque hotel
buildings, two superb restaurants and the unique award-winning
Follies. It also has a lounge, bar, patio, meeting rooms and a well
kept croquet lawn. A separate snooker room is also available to
guests.
The hotel has 66 en-suite bedrooms, most of which have been
recently refurbished. The room we stayed in had not yet been
refurbished but it was comfortable and had all that we needed,
including an iron and ironing board and a delightful view of the
croquet lawn.

Hawkstone first made its name in the 18th century when the then
owner of the mansion (Hawkstone Hall), Richard Hill, opened
Britain’s first tourist park. Hill created what is now recognised as
a masterpiece of the School of Naturalistic Landscape. Stone arches,
bridges, walkways and grottoes were added to the natural drama of
four rugged, wooded hills – and the resultant Gothic fantasy land
has proved a major draw ever since. After years of neglect, the
magical landscape was lovingly restored and re-opened in 1993. Hawkstone Park & Follies
has now been awarded Grade I certification on the English Heritage Register of Historic Gardens and Parks.

Golf has been played at Hawkstone Park since 1920 and it was
recently voted one of the top 20 golf destinations in the world.
The name Sandy Lyle is synonymous with Hawkstone
as the
Shrewsbury-born golfer, who won 27 world tour titles during an
exemplary career, was taught the game at Hawkstone by his father
Alex, who was golf professional for more than 30 years.

The spacious Hawkstone Restaurant is elegant and comfortable and offers a
table d’Hote dinner menu with a la carte extras. There is something
to suit all tastes here with a variety of vegetarian, fish and meat
dishes. The menu combines the best of both traditional home and
continental cooking and portions are ample and would easily satisfy
the appetites of those who had spent the day on the golf course or
wandering around the Follies. Breakfast is also not to be missed as
there was everything you could wish for and more. The service was
very good - friendly and attentive without being obtrusive.
The Terrace Restaurant situated in the Golf Centre, commands
panoramic views of Hawkstone’s two 18-hole golf courses and the
ruins of the 12th century Red Castle. Tasty meals are served during
the day all year round and in the evenings during spring and summer.
The Terrace provides less formal dining than the Hawkstone
Restaurant
Both the Hawkstone and Terrace restaurants are open to
non-members and non-residents and many special events are available
throughout the year.
Hawkstone Park is certainly
well worth a visit, for both golfers and non-golfers alike. See their
website for details of special events
