THE OLTON TAVERN
LODE LANE SOLIHULL
B92 8NU
0121 742 0515

The recently refurbished Olton Tavern
in Solihull caters well for families, having a children's "play
barn" adjacent with and is now completely
non-smoking.
We went on a Saturday evening which was busy at about 8pm but
quietened as the evening wore on. They were also under-staffed
so the service was rather slow. The restaurant is open plan with
rather high chairs (not terribly comfortable for the more vertically
challenged amongst us!). The carvery area is well set out and
rather less school canteen-like than some but the decor otherwise is
rather nondescript.

We chose from a good choice of starters -
Robert had Crispy Aromatic Duck Rolls which he enjoyed whilst I
chose Classic Bruschetta which sounded lovely but was rather
disappointing as I would have expected the topping to be cooked -
both were very nicely presented.
For the main course, Robert
had the traditional carvery which he really enjoyed, having a good
serving of several meats and plenty of vegetables. As a
non-meat eater, I opted for the Fish and Chips which again was very
disappointing. The nondescript fish consisted of two fish
steaks (the sort you buy frozen in a packet) rather than actual fish, the chips were adequate although the portion would not have
been large enough for someone of Robert's appetite and the small pot
of mushy peas were stone cold. I would have fared much better at the
local Fish and Chip shop. I also had a dessert which was
Caramel Apple Pie which was okay but nothing to make a fuss about.

All in all not the place for a quiet romantic dinner or an
important celebration but adequate if you just want something to eat
and can't be bothered to cook. Perhaps I just made unfortunate
choices as Robert was more than pleased with his carvery meal -
maybe they should concentrate on this side of the menu which they
obviously do best and offer less choice of other dishes. As it is a
carvery, I suspect that that is what the majority of diners would
choose anyway.
