Prana Restaurant and Lounge

Prana Restaurant is
certainly one of Birmingham's best kept secrets! Hard to spot from
the outside (next to the prestigious Mailbox and opposite the
Alexandra Theatre), it's certainly worth the effort to find. Having
said all that however, once having found it, we couldn't believe
that we'd driven past it twice without noticing it so perhaps it was
just us!

The black and red decor is stylish and sophisticated. The
bar area is modern and welcoming with its well-stocked bar and
friendly service. A good selection of tasty snacks is
available in the bar/lounge for those who prefer a more casual drink
and bite to eat.
The food in both the bar area and the restaurant is delicious - chef Parvinder Multani
has devised an eclectic menu
incorporating contemporary, traditional and original ideas which
must surely provide something for everyone's taste. From the house
of Oberoi, Parvinder has previously cooked for Bill Gates among others.
Prana's Manager, Tarrun Arora heads a first class team who
provide excellent service which is attentive without being
obtrusive. The restaurant is not the place to go for a quick curry and a pint
but if you are looking for excellent food served in attractive
surroundings then this is certainly the place to go!

A large choice of award-winning cocktails is available and the
selection of wines on offer is unsurpassed. As for the food,
there is a good range of prices and portions are generous - we
struggled to eat three courses (but managed somehow!).
Prices for the Starters range from £3.45 for Tomato
and Herb Shorba - a tantalizing broth of fresh tomatoes with
basil cream served with freshly baked naan croutes to £ 8.25
for plump butterfly prawns flavoured with carom in a spiced yoghurt
marinade, served barbequed with hot and fiery red tomato chutney
with a tempting choice to suit all tastes and pockets in between.
The extensive choice of Main Courses on offer begins with
Chicken Dum Malai Korma, reasonably priced at £ 7.95 through
to Lobster Malabari - succulent Canadian Lobsters marinated with
mustard and coated with a tomato salsa, served pan grilled over a
subtle coconut sauce and aromatic steamed rice for £24.95.
There is a great variety of dishes to choose with most falling
in to the £9 - £13 range. Chef Parvinder has also devised the
Progressive Main Courses which are his own creations and
combine elements from different styles of cooking. There really is
something for everyone, including an ample choice for Vegetarians.
There is also an excellent choice of accompanying salads, raitas,
rice, naans and vegetables at an additional cost.
Now for the Desserts - these range from the traditional Kulfi -
Indian ice cream in mango or pistachio flavour for £2.95
through a choice of both traditional and more unusual sweets to
Strawberry and Rasmalai Pyramid for £4.50 which we can
heartily recommend, along with a delicious hot Carrot Cake which is
not on the usual menu.
The menu also has a good choice of teas and coffees.

Prana Restaurant is well worth a visit and I suggest you make it
fairly soon because if there is any justice, a table at Prana should
soon become very hard to get when it takes the place it deserves as
one of the best restaurants in Birmingham. Prana's own web site can
