THE SPORTSMAN

19 Metchley Lane
Harborne
Birmingham
B17 0HT
Tel: 0121 426 0940

This recently refurbished pub provides excellent food in a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere. The inviting interior manages to combine both traditional and modern and is ideal for both those wanting to choose from the varied menu or those just content to have a relaxing drink. In my opinion however, having sampled the menu, anyone not trying at least one course from the delicious choice on offer is definitely missing out! The Sportsman is also rare in that it has a large pleasant garden to the rear which not only augments the amount of space the pub is able to provide but also gives it a distinct advantage over most "town" pubs.

The Sportsman offers an extensive choice of speciality lagers and ales as well as a good choice of wines.  These also come with recommendations as to which main courses they would best accompany.

The varied menu changes weekly with some favourites being constant and other new dishes being introduced over a period. There is a  range of hot and cold sandwiches and salads as well as the excellent choice of starters, main courses and puddings. All of the food is of the highest quality and well presented.

For my starter, I chose Grilled Salmon Skewer with a light citrus dressing and lime mayonnaise - an excellent choice - tasty and succulent, followed by caramelised Red Onion and Goats Cheese Filo Pastry Tart which was delicious. Robert had Chicken Fillets with a spicy Cajun sauce and mayonnaise, followed by Sausages and Mash with onion gravy; he was well pleased with his choice and practically licked the plates afterwards.  All were beautifully presented on stylish tableware and in ample portions. We both opted for a pudding, Robert going for the traditional Treacle Sponge with custard, whilst I had a deliciously rich but light chocolate fudge cake.  Prices range from £2.95 - £3.75 for starters and £5.95 - £9.95 for the main courses with puddings being around £2.75.

For tasty, home cooked food that is a bit out of the ordinary, served in comfortable, pleasant surroundings, we would certainly recommend that you try The Sportsman.
